Learn all my "secrets" to analyzing the DUTCH test & formulating plans for patients!

What is the DUTCH?

The DUTCH test is a dried, urine hormone test that can be used by clients to assess for common sex and stress hormones imbalances. This test goes beyond serum testing and takes into consideration hormone metabolites (breakdown products of these hormones) as well as assesses both free and metabolized cortisol and the cortisol awakening response, allowing for a deeper understanding of one’s HPA axis function. The DUTCH allows for functional medicine practitioners and dietitians to highly individualize diet and lifestyle recommendations, however reading the DUTCH test comes with a strict learning curve.

This 2.0 hour training will dive into the basics of how to read and interpret the DUTCH test, as well as help practitioners to understand the interconnecting web of the HPA (hypothalamic pituitary axis) and better understand what diet, lifestyle, and supplementation may be feasible for specific cases and conditions. From PCOS, estrogen dominance, high cortisol, to luteal phase insufficiency, this training will allow for 1.5 hours of education on the DUTCH with a 30 min educational Q&A.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand basic physiology of hormones including: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, and thyroid hormones.
  2. Identify potential causes of HPA axis dysfunction and
  3. Understand the role of cortisol in the body, what can lead to cortisol dysregulation, and how to assess various cortisol imbalances
  4. Discuss importance of diet and lifestyle in the pathophysiology and management of hormone imbalances.
  5. Discuss the DUTCH test markers for HPA axis dysfunction and how they influence health- including sex hormones, metabolized and free cortisol, HVA, VMA, melatonin, and MMA.
  6. Discuss the role of genetics and detoxification on hormonal health and how one can target the diet to improve patient well being
  7. Summarize the pathways of hormone metabolism and identify what lifestyle, diet, and supplementation affects can be made to help or hinder hormonal health
  8. Identify key limitations to the DUTCH test and signs for additional needed testing
  9. Evaluate case studies from DUTCH results and understand the connection between the targeted interpretation and protocol development
  10. Formulate safe and effective strategies to help in management of common HPA axis dysfunction cases.
